Status of Golden Butterflyfish in Indonesia
Golden Butterflyfish Chaetodon aureofasciatus Macleay, 1878 also known as Gold-striped Butterflyfish. Other name is Sunburst Butterflyfish.
Fish has grey color with a bright yellow and an orange band through the eye. Fish lives on reef 1 – 20 meter depth. It inhabits on silty coastal reefs including estuarine or near river mouth.
Fish feeds on coral polyps and forms pairs during breeding. This behaviour is used as indicator of the reef condition. The degradation of the reef condition can affect the occurrence of this fish.
Andreas Muljadi and Frederick Noke Rijoly reported that they found 64 fish at 10 locations in Aru islands on November 2020 (download the report). Jance Hehuwat also reported found 53 fish species at 8 locations in Aru islands in 2016. Rijoly also reported that he encountered this species in some locations in Tanimbar islands in 2009.
These reports are state that the Golden Butterflyfish inhabits in Indonesia waters especially in Aru islands and Tanimbar islands.
The reports also shows that as an MPA, Southeast Aru islands – managed by Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Republic of Indonesia, is good area to protect the biodiversity.
